Private cholesterol tests
Cholesterol testing, also known as a lipid blood test or a lipid profile test, is a test that looks at a number of blood lipids or ‘fats’. High cholesterol or lipid levels can increase your risk of heart disease, such as angina. This is where there’s a clogging up of the arteries that supply your heart and causing chest pain. If they become completely blocked up, this causes a heart attack. High cholesterol and lipid levels also increase the risk of stroke.
What's included in your cholesterol test?
This is measuring your serum cholesterol level and reflects your overall level of cholesterol.
Total cholesterol
HDL cholesterol is part of your lipid blood test. It's also known as your ‘good’ cholesterol and actually helps clear cholesterol out of your arteries.
HDL cholesterol
This is the total cholesterol minus a ‘good’ HDL cholesterol. It includes all the bad cholesterol including LDL cholesterol.
Non-HDL cholesterol
This is the total cholesterol divided by the HDL ‘good’ cholesterol and should be as low as possible.
Total cholesterol HDL ratio (TC:HDL ratio)
Triglycerides are also measured when you have your cholesterol check. If your triglycerides are raised you’re at risk of heart and liver disease as well as diabetes. Elevated levels of triglycerides can also be an inherited condition.
